In 2011, Kaitlyn Vella and her best friend, Amanda Gurock, posted rap music videos about MTV’s newest series, Teen Wolf. Their videos gained recognition and both went on to help with MTV’s social media handles. Vella is now the full time Social Media Editor for MTV and shares her advice on what it’s like to turn her public relations major into a full time career.
What is the story behind the Teen Wolf rap videos?
“They started as an attempt to get the Teen Wolf cast to notice my best friend Amanda and I. We didn’t put any thought or effort into the video and it was super awkward. Being that they were still in season one; we took a popular song that was always on the radio, Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass,’ and used that instead. It got such a great response; we continued to make more and more raps.”
How did you land the job at MTV?
“We developed friendships with the people connected to Teen Wolf and MTV in person and I ended up landing an internship. I made a good impression when I interned because when they called me in October they wanted me to start as soon as I graduated. During the three months I had left of school, I became MTV’s night tweeter and live tweeted all of the shows from @mtv and their other handles. In January, I officially started as their social media editor.”
What is a day in the life as the social media editor at MTV?
“It consists of sitting on Twitter and Facebook all day, reading up on entertainment news and scheduling articles on different platforms. Celebrities stop by and we’ll do some fun social takeovers with them, which livens up the day. When there are award shows, things tend to move at a much faster pace and people seem to be on edge. Once, I ended up watching the 2015 MTV Movie Awards three times before finishing all my work for the night.”
What has been your favorite part about being an editor for MTV?
“Getting to engage and interact with the fans on a daily basis. I remember when MTV tweeted me for the first time in 2011 I freaked out in my bedroom. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. Now I get to be that person to other people, while also getting to talk about some of my favorite people (One Direction, Teen Wolf cast, Selena Gomez, etc.) every single day.”
Do you plan on working for MTV as a career or where do you see yourself in five years?
“I honestly don’t know where I see myself in one year, let alone five. I absolutely adore working at MTV but I’m well aware that I can’t have this job forever. In five years, I’ll be 27 and probably won’t be as in touch with what our demographic is into anymore. I’d love to still be working in the entertainment industry.”
Since you studied Public Relations in college, how did school prepare you for your career?
“Public Relations Publications was the biggest help. That class focused on social media and really forced us to dive into specific aspects of how companies use social media/PR.”
What advice do you have for students interested in PR?
“The great thing about PR is that every place needs a PR person, so you can truly go into whatever field you want. It’s important that you actually enjoy what you’re doing or else you’re going to end up miserable. Work hard, stay passionate, put yourself out there and never give up on your dreams.”
