Your guide to the raddest, funkiest, coolest trends on the block this fall. Straying far from basic plaid, the list below ranges from 90s throwbacks to laidback accessories to super-fresh sneakers.
Discover my take on the latest trends, and get inspired to pop that collar and get to work this fall.
#1: Bomber Jacket
Tap into the military trend with a bomber jacket. You can find them in navy, black, olive green and even pink. Some are feather-light to help you stay cool while looking sharp, and some feature quilting or heavier lining for protection as temperatures drop.
#2: Tattoo and Velvet Chokers
Pay homage to the 90s’ by sporting two of the most popular fall accessories: stretchy tattoo and velvet chokers. The tattoo choker is made of stretch plastic thread, and comes across as fun and more casual. Velvet, on the other hand, can be thick or thin, and appear either collar-esque or delicate.
#3: Fashion sneakers
Dying to show your fashion aesthetic during long school days, but sick of heels? You’re in luck! Non-exercise sneakers are raging back into style. Classic Adidas are a popular item lately, thanks to insta-popular celebs like Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid. If you’re not a fan of the color or shape, Nike, Puma, and New Balance offer comfortable, but cool options.
#4: Ripped jeans
Let the light in with ripped jeans. Tear out the knees, overturn the pockets and fray the cuffs. Messed-up denim is here to stay. While denim – like plaid – has long been a back-to-school staple, a range of options are hitting the market. You can buy them painted or sequined. From the full-leg-shred to the faintest touch of distressing, there’s a look for everyone.
#5: Patches / pins
Patch it up with slogans, Emojis or a handful of pins. Wear your heart on your sleeve – literally – and embrace the trend that’s creeping its way into mainstream culture. You can find these patches and pins anywhere from mall stores to Etsy. Personal favorites include these slogan patches from Wildflower and Co., these quirky gems from Tuesday Bassen and these punk-rock pins from Laser Kitten.
#6: Small backpacks
Storage space is limited, but fashion cred is over the top with these cute bags. Ditch your tired, clunky backpack for a sharp, colorful one. Bonus points: they look great worn anywhere from the airport to the grocery store to school. Find out-of-this-world options everywhere from Forever 21 to Rack Addik.
#7: Crushed velvet
I’ve been crushing on velvet for ages…and the trend market has picked up the phone! Crushed velvet was spotted on runways and in retail stores alike. Steer clear of pieces that venture into “grandma” territory by keeping the shape fresh (think crop tops or sleek, structured dresses) and modern accessories. Bonus points for adding on thick chokers or denim jackets. Find them at Free People, Missguided, or H&M.
