On April 23, 2017, I visited Church Under the Bridge, a local church in Waco that seeks to move past the traditional four walls of a building and move into the city. Church Under the Bridge aims to avoid any distinction that aligns them with a certain race or denomination. The congregation meets under the I-35 overpass on Fifth St. directly across from the Baylor University campus. The church attracts people from all walks of life and celebrates the differences and experiences that make us who we are.
There is a certain vulnerability that comes with worshipping in a space so open like underneath a bridge. As the world moves above, you sit below. Not as rich, poor, black, white, gay or straight, but as people in need of something more, something that the world can never provide. This community of saints is tight-knit with people giving free haircuts, meals, water, clothing and support to those who need it the most. The voices of saints resonate off the concrete and up to the heavens–it is truly a moving sound. As you stand among the other people, it feels like the streets sing hallelujah with you.
