Recycling is one of the easiest ways for college students to love their planet! All it takes is one extra trash can and the determination to make our world a cleaner place. Baylor’s campus is filled to the brim with ways to recycle. If you live off campus — never fear! Fill out this form here from Waco Public Works to have a recycling bin delivered to your house for free!
- Get reusable bags
Instead of using plastic bags at the grocery store, bring your own. This cuts back on landfill waste and the possibility of plastic bags polluting our beautiful rivers and plains. For only $1.50 each at H-E-B, you can reduce plastic bag waste!
- Walk or bike to class
This can be hard for those who live six blocks or more from campus, but this is one of the most important changes a college student can make. Not only does it limit the harmful fumes in the air we breathe, it makes you healthier AND saves you the frustration of finding a parking spot in the garages.
- Go for glass
Switching from plastic to glass can make the biggest difference. Instead of buying big packs of plastic water bottles, buy a reusable one and decorate it with stickers to add a personal touch! When at restaurants, ditch the plastic straws because even this small change can make a huge difference to wildlife in our oceans.
- Shop locally
Baylor and Waco give you the opportunity to experience farmers markets, and Baylor’s is completely free! Now you can roam around and enjoy time with your friends on Saturday mornings — all while supporting fresh and local produce.
- Ditch the Styrofoam
Have you ever seen cups floating aimlessly on a riverbank? Most of the time, these cups are made from Styrofoam — one of the worst pollutants because it isn’t biodegradable. When Styrofoam is made, it’s here to stay… forever. Cutting it out of your life is one of the simplest ways to save the planet.
- Cut back on red meat
Cow flatulence actually has a horrible impact on the depletion of Earth’s ozone layer, which protects us from the Sun’s harmful UV rays. Cutting burgers back to once a month, or if you’re up for the challenge — completely out of your diet, is an awesome way to love your planet.
When going out to eat, driving to class, running errands or adventuring, share the ride! Less cars on the road means less fumes hurting the ozone and more Disney songs that can be jammed to with friends.
- Spend time outside
Seriously, sitting outside for 30 minutes impacts the way you view sustainability. The more time you spend with Earth, the happier and more eco-conscious you will be. Yay for vitamin D!
- Don’t beat yourself up
Sustainability means breaking habits that we’ve had for a long time. If you forget to recycle your plastic water bottle or eat a burger three times this week, don’t feel like your efforts are futile. Every step you make, big or small, can change the way you look at sustainability. Together, we can #GoGreenfortheGold!
